Using a FX card, debit or credit card for hotels, cruising or renting a car
When you check in at your hotel or hop on-board a cruise ship, you are often required to supply a credit or debit card in which the ship or hotel will put a hold on a certain amount of money for a security bond. These holds (pre-authorisations) can take up to 2 weeks to be released back into your account, meaning you don’t have access to that amount of money for that period of time. Be careful of tying up your funds with payment pre-authorisations and provide an FX card that contains funds that you do not need immediately after checking out. You won’t actually be charged, it will just have a hold put on a certain amount of money – so a credit card can be handy in this circumstance. Make sure to let the hotel or cruise ship know that you do not wish to settle your bill with the same credit card – please contact us if you are unsure and a travel money specialist will be happy to assist you.
