Cash in the Maldives

The official currency of the Maldives is the Maldivian Rufiyaa and currently one Australian Dollar is getting around 12 Rufiyaa. You will be unable to exchange your Australian Dollars to Rufiyaa before you leave Perth, as currently no exchange provider offers this currency. But don’t worry, as exchanging to Rufiyaa is not necessarily the easiest or cost-effective thing to do. US Dollars are an alternative currency that you can take with you to the Maldives, as most resorts and tour providers (and even stores at Male’ airport) will price in and accept US Dollars – so you won’t even have to convert it over to the local currency. Where you are able to pay with US Dollars, you are likely to receive change in the local Rufiyaa – so having a mixture of notes (including $1’s and $5’s) can be handy for small purchases and tipping.

If you are arriving into or travelling through Male’ you should find enough branches and ATM’s of the national Bank of Maldives to replenish your travel cash – however depending on where you are going to be spending the majority of your time, you will find that ATM access will become more limited and even non-existent on the smaller islands. Having US Dollar cash is a travel essential for the Maldives and can save you time and money on many occasions.

ATM access

ATM access is widespread in popular tourist areas in the Maldives, with most ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and suitable for international debit or credit card use. Although if you are staying in a remote area, you can search here for a guide* to ATM’s available in your location. Keep in mind that your card and the ATM is likely to have a maximum daily withdrawal limit, so plan ahead to make sure you have the cash you need. Currently the State Bank of India in the Maldives has a maximum withdrawal limit of 10,000 Rufiyaa, which is approximately $870 Australian Dollars worth – so depending on what you plan to spend, this can be used as a guide to help you pre-plan your travel money. Remember that ATM access will become more limited and even non-existent on the smaller islands.

Using your credit or debit card in the Maldives

Most resorts operate on a signing system, meaning you sign everything to your room and settle the bill at the end of your stay. At these resorts, international credit cards are welcome and you can choose to pay for your stay this way. Remember to check in with your bank to make sure that you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases in the Maldives, as you can also usually settle your bill with cash. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank and contact your accommodation provider to see if they will accept both cash and card at the end of your stay. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed by having an emergency contact number readily available. What options are available to you if you are unable to use your bank card when you are in the Maldives? You can avoid the disaster of having no access to cash by considering a travel card that gives you a free back-up card in the case of an emergency. Read more about how a travel card can give you an account that is not linked to your personal bank accounts, plus access to 24/7 phone support and emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes.
