Thai Baht cash

The official currency of Thailand is the Thai Baht – and it’s easy to buy Thai Baht in Perth at competitive rates before you depart. If you’re heading to the likes of Phuket or Koh Samui (or nearly everywhere for that matter) and plan to hit the streets for some market shopping, or jump in a tuk tuk (taxi) – then having local cash on hand is essential.  Smaller merchants do not have credit card facilities, so your credit cards are best reserved for hotels and department or specialty stores. Having local cash on hand in Thailand can also:

  • get you a cheap taxi from the airport to your hotel
  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • give you an alternative method of payment where your card is not accepted
  • reduce your international credit or debit card fees

If you need to exchange more money while you are in Thailand, Australian Dollar cash is accepted at exchange kiosks (notes, not coins). Make sure to look out for an authorised money exchange kiosk or stick to your hotel if you’re unsure.

ATM access

ATM access is widespread in popular tourist areas in Thailand, with most ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and suitable for international debit or credit card use. If you are staying in a remote area or on an island, you can search here for a guide* to ATM’s available in your location. Nearly all Thai banks charge up to 180 Baht (approx. $8 Australian Dollars) if you want to withdraw money from the ATM with a foreign card (which is your Australian issued card), so planning ahead and pre-organising some cash can save you a large amount of money on fees. If you really need to use a card while you’re there, try to use it over-the-counter in shops and restaurants – as you’ll be able to avoid that hefty Thai Bank ATM withdrawal fee.

Using your credit or debit card in Thailand

If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Please feel welcome to contact us if you are unsure if your credit or debit card will work. Remember to check in with your bank to make sure you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in Thailand. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. You can make fee-free purchases in shops and restaurants in Thailand with a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport card when you have Thai currency loaded onto it, read more about saving money with a travel card here. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed by having an emergency contact number readily available. What options are available to you if you are unable to use your card when you are in Thailand? You can avoid the disaster of having no access to cash by considering a travel card that gives you a free back-up card in the case of an emergency. The Mastercard Multi-Currency Cash Passport Card can give you an account that is not linked to your personal bank accounts, plus access to 24/7 phone support and emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes.
