ATM access

ATM access is widespread throughout South Africa with ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and suitable for international debit or credit card use. If you are staying in a remote area, you can search here to find ATM’s available in your location. If you are going on a guided tour, you are likely to be heading to some locations that are a little off the main path, so plan ahead and pre-organise some cash – read more about preparing for guided tours here.

South African Rand cash

The official currency of South Africa is the South African Rand. While you may want to consider your safety depending on where exactly you are visiting, cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having local currency on hand can:

  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
  • give you access to money in the event an ATM does not accept your card or is out of order
  • save you from paying high commission fees to exchange money in popular tourist areas
  • give you access to money if you are on a guided tour and unable to locate an ATM

See current rates for South African Rand using our online currency converter. We have Rand available for exchange and all exchanges are fee-free regardless of value.

Using your credit or debit card

Remember to check in with your bank to make sure you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in South Africa. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is also important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Please feel welcome to contact us if you are unsure if your credit or debit card will work. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed, by having a back-up source of funds available. Access to emergency assistance is a must, you can get emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes if you have a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport Card that is designed for travel. Read more about the travel card here.
