Croatian Kuna cash

The official currency of Croatia is the Croatian Kuna. Croatia has joined the EU but has maintained it’s own currency, so converting to Euro’s first will generally cost you more in exchange fees – as you will have to convert those Euro’s to Croatian Kuna when you arrive in Croatia. You might find that some businesses will quote prices and/or accept Euro’s as a form of payment, but they will determine the exchange rate so be mindful of a potentially poor rate – sticking to Kuna can be easier to know how much you are spending. Cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having local currency on hand can:

  • get you a taxi to your hotel
  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
  • save you from having to pay high commission fees to exchange money in popular tourist areas when you arrive in Croatia

Exchange Now stock Croatian Kuna in cash around the European Summer season, however if we are short of what you need we can order it for you very quickly. See rates for Croatian Kuna cash online or contact us for a quote today. All Kuna cash exchanges are commission free.

ATM access

ATM access is widespread in Croatia, with most ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and suitable for international debit or credit card use. If you are staying in a remote area, you can search here for a guide* to ATM’s available in your location.

Using your credit or debit card

Remember to check in with your bank to make sure you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in Croatia. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is also important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Please feel welcome to contact us if you are unsure if your credit or debit card will work. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed, by having a back-up source of funds available. Access to emergency assistance is a must, you can get emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes if you have a Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport Card that is designed for travel. Read more about the travel card here.

Thinking of taking a travel card to Europe or Croatia? You may be advised to load your card with only Euro’s and this can cost you significantly if you are visiting one or more countries that do not use the Euro – as you are going through two currency conversions to get to the currency that you need. Travel cards are a fantastic option for Europe and when loaded correctly, can save you paying huge credit card fees. Read more about the Mastercard Multi-currency Cash Passport Card here and contact us if you would like to talk more about which currencies are available to load.
