Hong Kong Dollar cash

The official currency of Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Dollar. Notes are issued by three different banks so you will find that there are many different types of each note – but don’t worry, despite the colour they are worth the same. Even though ATM’s are widespread, cash is a travel essential and can save you time and money on many occasions. Having local currency on hand can:

  • be handy for small purchases such as something to eat or drink
  • be great for scoring a bargain at the Temple Street night markets
  • give you an alternative method of payment in the event you are unable to pay with a card or you are charged an additional fee to pay with a card
  • save you from having to pay high commission fees to exchange money at the airport or in popular tourist areas when you arrive in Hong Kong
  • give you a back up source of funds if an ATM is out of order or does not accept your card

Using Chinese currency in Hong Kong

It is a common assumption that the currency of China can be spent everywhere in Hong Kong. Whilst more and more stores in Hong Kong are beginning to accept Chinese Yuan, it’s acceptance is not widespread so you will still need to organise Hong Kong Dollars if you are visiting. At the stores that do accept Chinese currency, you will still go through the conversion from Yuan to Hong Kong Dollars – but at an exchange rate that is decided by that store. This exchange rate is often very poor and you may receive far less than you would have if you had just initially exchanged your Australian Dollars directly to Hong Kong Dollars. If you are travelling from China to Hong Kong and have leftover currency, you can exchange Chinese Yuan to Hong Kong Dollars at an authorised money exchange bureau. Look out for a kiosk that offers commission free exchange at a competitive rate.

ATM access

ATM access is widespread in Hong Kong, with most ATM’s operating 24 hours a day and suitable for international debit or credit card use. If you are staying in a remote area, you can search here for a guide* to ATM’s available in your location. Keep in mind that your card and the ATM is likely to have a maximum daily withdrawal limit, so plan ahead to make sure you have the cash you need. See Hong Kong Dollar cash exchange rates here.

Using your credit or debit card in Hong Kong

International credit cards are welcome at most retailers, restaurants and hotels in Hong Kong. If you are planning to take your debit card with you, It is important to make sure that your card will work overseas. Look on the front and back of your card and make sure that there is a Visa, Mastercard or American Express symbol on the card. If there are none of these symbols, there may be a Maestro or Cirrus logo – these cards will only work at ATM’s that display the Cirrus or Maestro logo. Remember to check in with your bank to make sure that you are fully aware of the fees you will be charged to make purchases or to withdraw money from an ATM in Hong Kong. Click here to see common credit/debit card fees and charges before you speak with your bank. Always prepare for the event that your card is lost, stolen or skimmed by having an emergency contact number readily available. What options are available to you if you are unable to use your bank card when you are in Hong Kong? You can avoid the disaster of having no access to cash by considering a travel card that gives you a free back-up card in the case of an emergency. Read more about how a travel card can give you an account that is not linked to your personal bank accounts, plus access to 24/7 phone support and emergency cash in as little as 20 minutes.
